A Plan to Encourage News Corrections

Journalists do not like to write corrections. Sometimes that's because they haven't made mistakes. But sometimes, as when someone asserts that he or she has been libeled, it is because a news organization is afraid of being sued if it admits an error. The issue of when the press should correct itself -- and how much it might have to pay when it does -- grew more complex last week. An influential national legal body, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, proposed a new law aimed at encouraging corrections and limiting libel suits. The idea appears destined to ignite bitter battles in state legislatures as it is presented to them in the next few years.

As the marketing director of WBTV, the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, N.C., Mike Burney had to do something to stop the hemorrhaging of his nightly news program's ratings.
His main competitor, WSOC, had a gimmick. Viewers of its 6 P.M. news could win $1,000 each if they called the station after seeing their names and driver's license numbers flash on the screen during commercials. So Mr. Burney retaliated in kind. His station offered $3,000 to the 13th person to call after seeing his or her birth date appear on a table-tennis ball chosen at random from a vat.

The Bleach Thickens: Mets Ready To Speak

The Mets will make an announcement this afternoon regarding their investigation into the bleach-spraying incident in their Shea Stadium clubhouse two weeks ago, Gerry Hunsicker, their assistant vice president for baseball operations, said last night. Hunsicker would not elaborate on the nature of the announcement, refusing to comment on whether the player or players involved in the July 27 incident would be named and whether the Mets would reveal what action, if any, would be taken.

Heinz Sells Italian Unit

The Hershey Foods Corporation said today that it had agreed to buy the confectionery business of the H. J. Heinz Company's Italian subsidiary for an undisclosed price. Hershey said the Heinz business was the leader in the Italian confectionery market, making sugar candies, gift boxes and other candy products. The unit had sales of 160 billion lire, or about $100 million, for the year that ended March 31.

DELTA SETS PACT WITH FLIGHT DISPATCHERS

Delta Air Lines Inc. has negotiated a contract agreement with its flight dispatchers, ending six months of concession talks. The Professional Airline Flight Control Association, which represents 160 flight dispatchers, agreed to accept a 5 percent pay cut and reduced benefits. Similar cuts were imposed last year on Delta's roughly 65,000 nonunion employees. About 80 percent of the dispatchers voted for the agreement, a union official said. Delta, which said it expected to save about $500,000 annually from the contract, remains stalled in concession talks with the Air Line Pilots Association.

EMC AGREES TO ACQUIRE EPOCH SYSTEMS

The EMC Corporation agreed yesterday to purchase Epoch Systems Inc. for 4.75 million shares. Under the agreement, the transaction price is subject to a limit that is below yesterday's closing price of $30.50 for EMC shares, according to an EMC spokesman. Based on that share price, however, the transaction would have a value of about $144.8 million.

ROCKWELL TO BUY WESTERN DIGITAL CHIP PLANT

The Rockwell International Corporation signed a letter of intent yesterday to purchase the Western Digital Corporation's chip manufacturing plant in Irvine, Calif., for $115 million. The sale will permit Western Digital to pay off most of its $137 million in bank debt. Shares of Western Digital rose 75 cents, to $5.75, as almost 1.1 million shares were traded. Mr. Blair said the plant had been producing about 1,800 wafer starts a week, well below its capacity of 3,000 weekly. Wafer starts represent the first step in turning a piece of silicon into a chip.

AMERICAN AIRLINES TO LAY OFF MORE PILOTS

American Airlines said yesterday that it planned to lay off about 400 pilots in the next six months, or about 50 more than it had previously announced. In June, American said it planned to lay off about 350 pilots starting on Aug. 31. The AMR Corporation, the parent of American Airlines, employed 119,000 workers at the beginning of the year, 10,000 of them pilots.

Medco Containment Services shareholders have filed a lawsuit charging that the company's planned acquisition by Merck & Company cheats stockholders by at least $80 million. Named as defendants in the suit filed in Delaware Chancery Court are Medco's chairman, Martin J. Wygod; its vice chairman and chief financial officer, James V. Manning, and the executive vice president, Robert J. Levenson. Medco, Medco's board and Merck are also named.
