Poll Shows Tight Race in Texas In a Sign of Vulnerability for Bush

Underscoring the Republicans' vulnerability even in states they once counted on, the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll shows that President Bush is locked in a tight race with Gov. Bill Clinton in the critical state of Texas. The poll shows Mr. Bush with a narrow edge in Texas, with the backing of 41 percent of the voters to 37 percent for Mr. Clinton, a lead that is within the poll's margin of sampling error. It also shows that Ross Perot, who was widely expected to be more popular in his home state of Texas than almost anywhere else, has the backing of a modest 11 percent.

UNISYS IS AWARDED $115 MILLION CONTRACT BY THE I.R.S.

The Unisys Corporation said yesterday that its Unisys Government Systems unit had won a $115 million contract to supply computer systems to Internal Revenue Service tax-return processing centers. The company, based in Blue Bell, Pa., said in a statement that it would supply information systems and services at 10 regional I.R.S. processing centers and the agency's national computing center in Martinsburg, W. Va.

UNITS OF PFIZER BROADEN SUIT AGAINST SCI MED

Sci Med Life Systems Inc. said yesterday that two units of Pfizer Inc. had moved to broaden their patent-infringement suit against Sci Med to include a new catheter that is under review by the Food and Drug Administration. The units filed suit in April 1991, contending that Sci Med's Express rapid-exchange catheter violated their patent. Investors are counting on the new angioplasty catheter to replace the Express, which makes up an estimated 30 percent of Sci Med's sales. Sci Med's shares lost $4.50 in over-the-counter trading yesterday, closing at $48.25.

Third-party insurance claims for the crash of an El Al cargo plane in Amsterdam on Sunday are likely to total $200 million, the chairman of the Lloyd's Aviation Underwriters' Association said yesterday. "The Amsterdam crash will be the most expensive claim for third-party damage caused by an aircraft," John Westcott said in London. Third-party liability is compensation for damage by a policyholder to someone else.

The Maxwell Communication Corporation was given a 60-day extension yesterday in New York to file a plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Judge James Garrity of the United State Bankruptcy Court signed an order granting the extension beyond the original deadline of Oct. 13. Yesterday's extension was the third granted in the Maxwell bankruptcy case, which is under dual administration by courts in the United States and in Britain.

The Reynolds Metals Company has ended negotiations to sell its Alreco Metals Inc. unit to the U. S. Reduction Company, Reynolds said on Wednesday. Reynolds did not say why discussions on selling the Benton Harbor, Mich., aluminum reclamation operation had been terminated. Alreco Metals supplies secondary aluminum to the automotive industry. U. S. Reduction signed a letter of intent to purchase the unit in August. Terms of the agreement were not released.

Societe Generale today reported an 8.2 percent increase in consolidated net attributable profit to 1.98 billion francs, or $409 million, in the first half of this year from 1.83 billion francs a year earlier. Net profit, including minority interests, rose 15.7 percent, to 2.29 billion francs from 1.98 billion, Marc Vienot, the chairman, said. Net banking income rose 5.5 percent, to 18.60 billion francs from 17.63 billion.
